TORONTO TO SOLICIT INPUT ON SOLVING GRIDLOCK

Toronto is beginning a consultation process on how to find the money to relieve traffic congestion.

Gridlock costs the city billions of dollars a year. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan calls it a crisis that is affecting the entire Canadian economy.

So the City is launching Feeling Congested next week. Toronto residents will be invited to submit their ideas on how they would like to see the gridlock problems solved, and how they should be funded.

Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat says the city is offering 17 proposals, and hopes to get a consensus on five of those.

Feeling Congested will include a series of public meetings and an online questionnaire. The regional transportation agency, Metrolinx, will use the feedback in its report to the province on how to find the money to ease gridlock. That report is due in June.
